Albuquerque Museum

The Albuquerque Museum is run by the city's Department of Arts and Culture and serves as the official home base for many of its cultural preservation efforts. The building houses a massive collection of records, artifacts, and works of art documenting how local life changed over time.  

Most of these items are part of their permanent exhibitions and can be viewed at any time, but there are also a few limited-time special exhibitions on display. Visit this month to see: 

• Open to All: A Century of Access at Special Collections Library, a celebration of the city's first library and its enduring legacy 
• Beauty in the Breakdown, an examination of how chemical decay affects old historical photographs 
• Maps and Marginalia: Marking the Unknown, an exploration of how colonialism influenced the illustrations that were drawn around the edges of early maps 

The museum is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. Tickets cost $5 per person for New Mexico residents ($6 for out-of-state visitors) or $3 for kids aged 4 to 12. Kids aged 3 and under can visit for free with an adult.

516 ARTS  

Address: 516 Central Ave. SW, Albuquerque, NM 87102 

516 ARTS is the only art museum in Albuquerque dedicated exclusively to local contemporary art. They have a small permanent collection on display, but they use most of their space for temporary exhibits that explore different facets of modern New Mexican cultural identity. Two of the last set ended on January 31st, and replacements are expected to arrive in the coming weeks.  

The museum plans to move into a new, larger building on the corner of First Street and Marquette Avenue sometime later this year, so now is the perfect time to see their current collection in person. Their Central Avenue location is open from noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday and is free to visit. 

Yucca Art Gallery 

Address: 206½ San Felipe St. NW, Albuquerque, NM 87104 

With more than 60 years in business, Yucca Art Gallery is proud to be the oldest art co-op still active in Albuquerque. Just under 40 local artists are active members of the collective, working in mediums like:

• Oil paints
• Watercolors

• Ceramics 

Many of these artists have won prestigious awards for their work, regularly participate in juried exhibitions and gallery shows, and have contributed pieces to the permanent collections of galleries around the country. Come see some of their recent creations on display and get a sneak peek into the artistic process while they work on new ones.

Indian Pueblo Cultural Center

The Indian Pueblo Cultural Center seeks to share the cultural beliefs, traditions, and practices of the 19 Pueblo tribes that still live in New Mexico. Hosting art exhibitions that showcase the work of the tribes' members is one of the many ways they work toward this goal. 

Their current star art exhibition is called Indigenous Freeways. Presented in partnership with the Arrowsoul Art Collective, it features a collection of murals by Indigenous artists exploring social reciprocity in a changing world. 

You can visit the center from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. Admission is $10 for New Mexico residents or $12 for out-of-state guests. Seniors, students, and children aged 5 to 17 can visit for just $8. Kids under 5 get in for free. Visit on Tuesdays to get two adult tickets for the price of one.  

Gallery Hózhó

There's always something new to see at Gallery Hózhó, a trendsetting contemporary fine art gallery based inside Albuquerque's Hotel Chaco. Their collection features works from top local artists specializing in a wide range of mediums, including:

Tickets cost $20 per adult and $10 per child, but you can get a $5 discount on adult tickets by buying them early. A portion of the proceeds for every ticket sold will go to charities like the American Cancer Society and Ronald McDonald House Charities of New Mexico, so you'll be supporting a good cause! 

Old Town Holiday Stroll

Albuquerque's Old Town Holiday Stroll is one of the state's most popular seasonal events, attracting crowds of tourists and locals every year. From 5 PM to 9 PM on December 5th, the city's historic Old Town district will light up with hundreds of paper bag luminarias. Head into the thick of the action to enjoy:

The attraction is open from 5 PM to 10 PM every evening from November 29th to December 30th, except for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Space is limited and tickets must be purchased in advance. Admission is $21 for adults and $12 for kids between the ages of 3 and 12. On value nights, you'll pay just $15 per adult and $10 per kid.  

ABQ Trolley of Lights 

Address: 800 Rio Grande Boulevard NW, Albuquerque, NM 87104 

ABQ Trolley of Lights takes guests on a journey through Old Town and along the Rio Grande Boulevard in search of the city's best holiday light displays near our Albuquerque homes for sale. You'll see many beautiful festive scenes along the way, including elegant light accents on some of the city's oldest adobe buildings. Each tour is led by a friendly guide who will offer fun facts about the history of the areas you visit and lead the group in festive caroling.  

This tour is only available from December 14th to December 23rd. There are two tours each night: one at 6 PM and one at 8 PM. Each tour lasts 75 to 90 minutes and costs $34.46 per person, including fees. Kids under 5 can ride for free if they sit on your lap. 

Winter of Enchantment

Winter of Enchantment is a multi-part holiday experience hosted by Big Jim Farms. Whether you're a local foodie or a parent with young kids, you're sure to find something here to interest you.

About the Event

Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta celebrates the science and artistry of hot air ballooning. Every day for nine full days, hundreds of hot air balloons are launched into the sky, giving attendees a stunning view of their colorful exteriors rising over the New Mexico skyline. Most stay aloft for several hours during each day.

2024's Fiesta will run from Saturday, October 5th to Sunday, October 13th. The festivities begin at 6 AM or earlier each day, with some events starting as early as 4:30 AM. Most days end with an 8:00 PM fireworks show, but some wrap up earlier in the afternoon. Check the event schedule for more details on what's happening during the day you want to attend.

Pricing

You'll need a ticket to get onto the Fiesta grounds. Gondola Club tickets cost $130 per person and include private parking, exclusive seating, access to a gourmet buffet, and some souvenirs to take home. Chaser's Club tickets cost $65 per person and include patio seating and a hot food item with dessert and beverages from one of the on-site food vendors. General admission tickets cost $15 per person over 13 and is free for kids 12 and under.

If you're driving to the event, you may also want to use the on-site parking facilities. You can purchase a parking pass for an extra $20 a day. Park and ride services are available on some days for $25, including event admission. You'll also pay at least $15 extra to attend the Music Fiesta show on October 12th. Special seating is available for those who purchase higher-tier tickets. 

Finally, there are several camping and glamping packages available for those who wish to spend multiple days at the event. All tents are set up in advance by the event organizers, so all you have to do is show up and have a good time. You can even take the basic tents home with you when you leave!

Other Things to Do

The fun doesn't end with each day's balloon launch. On top of watching the balloons float through the sky during the daytime flight period, you can also attend a few smaller events on the ground. Visit the Balloon Discovery Center to see how the balloons work up close and learn more about the science that powers these airborne marvels. Watch skilled craftspeople compete in chainsaw carving exhibitions and participate in auctions where you can bid on your favorite finished projects. 

Live music will be playing every day on the Main Street stage, accompanied by a variety of professional dance performances. On October 12th, the event will also host the Music Fiesta, a separately ticketed event featuring headliners like LOCASH and Carly Pearce.

There are also some unique spectator events that you can only witness during the early morning and evening hours. Balloon Fiesta is particularly well-known for its Balloon Glows, events in which all of the balloons present fire up their burners at the same time and create a gorgeous display. Other displays include skydiving shows starring Team Fastrax (the world's largest parachute demonstration team!), drone light shows, and fireworks.

Finally, fast food restaurant Chick-fil-A will be sponsoring a Kids' Day on the Fiesta grounds on Friday, October 11th. Kids will get to participate in fun activities and receive a free goodie bag by visiting the Chick-fil-A tent.

  When fall arrives, the rain tends to pick up. You need to make sure the home's gutters are draining well so that they carry water away from the home's walls and foundation. Luckily, cleaning your home's gutters is not very hard as long as you're comfortable on a ladder.
  
  Put on a glove, and reach your hand into the gutter. Scoop out the gunk inside the gutter and put it in a bucket. Once you've worked your way down the whole gutter, you can use a hose or a bucket of water to rinse out any remaining small debris.

  If the weatherstripping is the issue, you can usually just pull it out and replace it. If the caulk is peeling or missing chunks, then pulling it out and re-caulking is usually the way to go. You can also do a temporary fix with some rope caulk.
